Introducing Katie Jenifer
(Wednesday, July 10, 2019) Happy Wednesday! Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jenifer, whose pronouns are she, her and hers. Katie is 47-years-old and is one of our Holly Law Fellows this summer. She is joining us from Carrboro, North Carolina, where she is a 3L Law Student at North Carolina Central University School of Law. But for the summer, Katie is calling the Georgetown Law School, Gewirz Student Center home.
Why did you choose the Task Force?
I am the proud mama bear of two rainbow kids (one is bi and one is trans). I want to be the best legal advocate for them and the whole LGBTQ community that I can be. What better place to learn to do that than the Task Force?
What would you say you are best known for?
Mothering everyone around me and falling down a lot.
Who is an LGBTQ+ person that inspires you?
DeShanna Neal, Family Organizer at the National Center for Transgender Equality and lesbian mama bear of four kiddos. DeShanna and her daughter, Trinity (15), are trans rights advocates and activists in Delaware. They fought to have transition-related care covered by Medicaid in Delaware and won. Together they are writing and illustrating a children’s book. Throughout a recent divorce, coming out as lesbian, and suddenly becoming physically disabled, DeShanna remains steadfast in her love, support, and advocacy for her children and her community. About six months ago, she started a YouTube channel, Dollar Meals by DeShanna, for folx who are living in food deserts and rely on Dollar Stores for groceries. DeShanna is a visible and vocal leader in the movement to stop killing black trans women and uses her voice and influence to make positive change happen.
Thank you, Katie, for using your voice and presence to make positive change happen here at the Task Force with us, this summer!
