U.S. Navy to Name Ship After LGBTQ Rights Leader Harvey Milk

Washington, DC, August 2, 2016—The National LGBTQ Task Force is welcoming the naming of a United States Navy ship after the legendary LGBTQ rights leader Harvey Milk. As was the case with the issuance by the United States Postal Service of a special Harvey Milk Forever Stamp, the successful effort to establish the U.S.S. Harvey Milk was led by the International Imperial Court System. Milk served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s.

“This is a fitting tribute to the extraordinary work of Harvey Milk. It also recognizes the many LGBTQ people who have served and are serving in the military — who couldn’t openly when Harvey served. Now they can, thanks in no small part, to the legacy of Lieutenant Harvey Milk, U.S.N. We deeply thank our colleagues at the Imperial Court led by former National LGBTQ Task Force board member Nicole Murray Ramirez, for their ceaseless work to make this tribute happen,” said Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.
