DOMA must go!
While hundreds rallied on the steps in support of marriage equality, the Supreme Court today heard oral arguments in United States v. Windsor, a challenge to the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA). This challenge is from Edith “Edie” Windsor, who sued the federal government for failing to recognize her marriage to her partner Thea Spyer, after Spyer’s death in 2009. Windsor and Spyer, who were a couple for 44 years, were married in Canada in 2007, and were considered married by their home state of New York.
According to numerous reports from inside the courtroom, the justices were very skeptical of DOMA’s constitutionality. Meanwhile, speakers at today’s United for Marriage rally were convinced that it is only a matter of time before full equality is reached. A diverse array of speakers emphasized the need for not only marriage equality, but full LGBT equality that leaves no one behind. When Edie finally walked out of the court today, the crowd went wild and Edie was beaming and blowing kisses to the crowd in thanks.
