Time to pass the Student Non-Discrimination Act!
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force applauds today’s reintroduction in the U.S. House of the Student Non-Discrimination Act. The bipartisan measure prohibits any school program or activity receiving federal financial assistance from discriminating against any public school student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The Task Force is working in coalition to pass this legislation.
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey says:
The epidemic of discrimination and bullying in our nation’s schools is a tragedy and an outrage. No student should fear getting beaten up, harassed or targeted for discriminatory treatment simply because of who they are, or are perceived to be. For students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender — or simply thought to be — this is a very painful, dangerous and daily reality. Parents, educators, policymakers — all of us — need to be part of the solution to ensure our young people have a safe and fair learning environment. The Student Non-Discrimination Act will help get us there, and we urge Congress to swiftly pass this critical bill.
