Washington, D.C., February 9, 2021 – The National LGBTQ Task Force will launch the Sex Ed Leadership Project on March 3, 2021, following the success of two mini-conferences that offered training and programming on LGBTQ+ inclusive sex ed policy work. The project aims to strengthen local efforts by young LGBTQ activists to advocate for sex education policy changes. It will consist of 10 virtual sessions designed to strengthen advocacy skills and focus on navigating democratic processes to enact sex education policy change.
“This type of information and training opportunities that specifically address the needs of LGBTQ+ youth are seriously lacking and this ambitious and comprehensive program will provide participants with detailed, focused and impactful information and specific strategies paired with the tools to put them into practice and make a difference in their communities,” said Taissa Morimoto.
The course is designed for people ages 15 – 28 – for young LGBTQ advocates, activists and people who are new to advocacy or want to learn more about how to advance comprehensive, LGBTQ-centered, and inclusive sex ed. If you have question or want to learn more about the project, an informational session will be held February 17 at 6:00 PM ET. The informational session will provide an overview of the course and answer any questions people may have. The course itself will formally begin March 3 at 6 PM ET.
Some of these sessions will include presentations on storytelling for change by Rachel Hill, Community Outreach and Engagement Manager at Equality Texas; sex education laws and policies by Jennifer Driver, Founder of Take Root Strategies; and effective sex education messaging by Zach Einstein, Senior Account Executive at Spitfire Strategies. The course is developed to help young LGBTQ people build movement and create strategies for implementing a more comprehensive, inclusive sex ed.
“I joined the sex-ed program in Texas to gain more insight into the issues present in health education,” said Bryant, a member of the 2020 Sex Ed Leadership Project. “The program helped me be a better advocate for people in every direction, but it also gave me creative control to express myself in a way I’ve never done before. I got to be surrounded by a group of amazing friends that I could be open and honest with, and I felt heard in their presence. I’d recommend anyone to give the program a shot and see what is in store for them. It is a difficult process, but incredibly rewarding. I’d do it all over again if I could.”
