H.R. 1: A Bill of Betrayal. A Call to Action.

| By Allen Morris

On July 4–a day meant to symbolize freedom–H.R. 1 was signed into law, finalizing a legislative assault that will devastate millions of people across the United States. The National LGBTQ Task Force is sounding the alarm on this dangerous bill and urging our communities to understand its consequences, mobilize against its harms, and prepare for the work ahead.

Despite its slick branding as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” H.R.1 is neither beautiful nor benevolent. It represents a radical reordering of our country’s priorities—one that favors the wealthy over everyday people. Behind the smiles and slogans lies a blueprint for slow, systemic destruction. This bill wasn’t written for working families, young people, or communities of color—it was designed to dismantle the very programs that give our people a fighting chance.

At its core, it reshapes healthcare, education, economic security, immigration, and climate policy in drastic ways. Once again, our communities – queer, trans, people of color, labor members, able and disabled, young and old – are being offered up as collateral in a pollical game where profit is the only winner.

Let us be clear: our communities have never been passive recipients of injustice. We are builders, organizers, cultural workers, policy shapers, and truth-tellers. In the face of rising brutality and coordinated attacks on our rights, we meet the moment–not in silence, rather in loud defiance.

Let’s break down what H.R. 1 really does–and why it matters to you, your neighbors, and generations to come:

What’s in H.R.1?

  • Slashes funding for life-saving healthcare. Drastic cuts to Medicaid and Medicare are scheduled to begin in 2027 and 2028. Millions—especially in rural and low-income areas—will lose access to essential healthcare, pushing already-stretched clinics and hospitals toward collapse.
  • Guts nutrition programs like SNAP and WIC. These food assistance programs aren’t luxuries—they’re safety nets that keep families fed. H.R.1 strips critical resources from families already navigating food insecurity, hitting single parents, disabled folks, and working-class families the hardest.
  • Defunds housing programs through HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development). By cutting support for affordable housing and homelessness prevention, this bill will worsen the housing crisis in both cities and rural communities, with LGBTQ+ people and people of color facing the harshest consequences.
  • Legalizes gerrymandering. Under H.R.1, partisan redistricting becomes law—diluting the power of voters in working-class, Black, brown, disabled, and queer communities. It’s a direct attack on our political voice and our right to shape the future. Note: “Gerrymandering” is the manipulation of boundaries to voting districts to gain an unfair advantage in elections.
  • Wraps it all in a name meant to deceive. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is a prime example of manipulation. Don’t be fooled—this legislation isn’t about unity or progress. It’s about control.

What Happens Now?

The passage of H.R. 1 doesn’t just reflect a dangerous ideology; it confirms it. This bill and all who support it are sending a chilling message: protecting corporate profits and political power outweigh the lives and dignity of the people who keep this country running. We are being told that care, equity, and liberation are not priorities. We reject that message.

This legislation is not the end– it’s a call to begin again. A call to reconnect, to relearn, and to remind each other that collective action builds power. Whether you’re feeling confused, angry, or overwhelmed– we see you. You are not alone.

We will fight to address the impacts of this bill. We will educate lawmakers, challenge them at every turn, and demand policies rooted in equity, justice, and liberation for all. We will keep going, not just because we have to– but because our big, beautiful community always has and always will.

We know the truth: You are worth more than tax breaks and political theater.

Mobilize with us!

While they betray, we organize.

While they hoard, we nurture.

While they erase, we remember.

While they retreat into greed, we move towards each other.

Join us for the next Organizing Committee event on Thursday, August 28 at 7:00 pm EST. More information will be released closer to this convening.

Let’s build the skills, relationships, and strategies we need to get through this–and thrive–together.
