Women’s History Month: “Time to celebrate, time to be vigilant”

Washington, DC, March 5, 2015 — In celebration of Women’s History Month, the National LGBTQ Task Force issued the following statement:

“This month we get the opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary contribution women have made and are making to everyone’s lives—and the progress we have made and are making to achieve freedom, justice and equality. And yet, we live at a time when transgender women—particularly transgender women of color—are being murdered. We are also seeing opponents of equality even more determined to roll-back some of the most important advances we have struggled for—from access to abortion and birth control to access to our democracy and equal pay. These opponents of freedom are also twisting the true meaning of religious freedom to justify discrimination and to act as though they don’t have to follow the same laws as the rest of us. We can’t let them win and we must be vigilant. So this Women’s History Month, let’s work even harder to end these murders and to ensure that we preserve, sustain, and advance freedom, justice and equality for all women,” said Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.
