White House Rally to End Detention of LGBTQ Immigrants

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 30, 2015—Today, the National LGBTQ Task Force will join undocumented immigrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) activists at a rally in front of the White House to elevate their calls for fair immigration reform. The action, organized by United We Dream, is part of “The Break the Cage” campaign calling on the Administration to immediately end the unsafe detention of LGBTQ immigrants. According to a report by the Center for American Progress, LGBTQ people are fifteen times more likely than others to experience physical assault and rape at profit-driven detention centers. The rally takes place the day after the Administration announced new guidance that would place transgender women in women’s detention facilities. Activists believe it does not go far enough.
