Voting Rights Amendment Act Introduced

Today, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced legislation that would restore protections in the Voting Rights Act that were struck down by the Supreme Court last year.

Statement by Rea Carey, executive director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund:

“Today’s introduction of the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act will restore the heart of the landmark civil rights legislation, so unceremoniously gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013. You only had to watch the voter suppression tactics against people of color in the last election to see why the law passed in the 1960s is still absolutely relevant and essential today in delivering justice and a free and fair democracy. We commend US Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner and John Conyers Jr. and Senator Patrick Leahy for championing this vital legislation.”
