Transgender activist accuses NYPD of mistreatment at Occupy Wall Street protest



Justin Adkins, an activist arrested October 1 as part of Occupy Wall Street‘s protest on the Brooklyn Bridge, says officers in Precinct 90 from the New York Police Department (NYPD) singled him out and mistreated him because of his gender identity, according to a statement released on his Web site. A recent report by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the Task Force, “Injustice at Every Turn,” revealed the depth of discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people in a wide range of areas. One of the key findings from the study revealed that 22 percent of respondents reported harassment by law enforcement officers and nearly half were uncomfortable seeking police assistance.
