Task Force on ‘Morning Edition’ to discuss violence against transgender people

Lisa Mottet, director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Transgender Civil Rights Project, was among those featured in a segment on National Public Radio’s popular “Morning Edition” program addressing the scourge of violence directed toward transgender people in Washington, D.C.

Mottet talked about how violence toward transgender and gender non-conforming people is pervasive, not just in D.C., but all across the country. Listen to the full segment and read the transcript. She cited findings from the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, released earlier this year by the Task Force and National Center for Transgender Equality.

The survey found that 26 percent of transgender people said they had experienced some type of physical assault because of who they are.

The recent violence specifically targeting transgender people of color in D.C. was also a topic of discussion an ‘Out on the Hill‘ event. Task Force Deputy Executive Director Darlene Nipper moderated the town hall panel, where she discussed the newly released Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey.
