Task Force congratulates Governor Kate Brown on her inauguration
Makes history as nation’s first openly bisexual Governor
Washington, DC: Feb. 19, 2015 — The National LGBTQ Task Force is congratulating Oregon’s Kate Brown for making history as our nation’s first openly bisexual governor.
“We warmly congratulate Governor Kate Brown on her inauguration and her courage to bring her entire self to public life as our nation’s first openly bisexual governor. Bisexual people are some of the most misunderstood members of our LGBTQ community. From assuming that we ‘don’t exist’— even though statistically we comprise the largest group in our community — to the hyper-sexualizing of bisexual people; we know that public education is still needed as these stereotypes can have serious consequences. For instance, research shows that when compared to straight women and gay men, bisexual women, experience higher rates of sexual abuse, smoking, and suicide. It’s our hope that as more people in the public eye such as Governor Brown come out as bisexual, it will encourage more bisexual people to come out. We urge everyone (including members of the LGTQ community) to educate themselves more about the issues affecting us and the reality of our lives,” said Stacey Long Simmons, Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs, who is openly bisexual.
