Task Force at the ‘OUT on the Hill Black LGBT Leadership Summit’

The Task Force is again partnering with the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) for the third annual OUT on the Hill Black LGBT Leadership Summit.

More than 200 black LGBT leaders and activists from across the country are gathering Sept. 19-22 in Washington, D.C., to strategize and organize, as well as educate congressional leaders and federal agencies about black LGBT public policy concerns.

As part of the pre-conference events, the Task Force co-sponsored Closets Are For Clothes: Being LGBT and POC in America, which addressed findings of the Social Justice Sexuality Project, one of the largest national surveys of LGBT black, Latina/o, Asian and Pacific Islander and multiracial people. In addition, Task Force Deputy Executive Director Darlene Nipper will speak at Building Black LGBT Political Power In Our Nation’s Capitol, a legislative briefing that will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She will also be a featured speaker at the opening and closing sessions of the summit.

Task Force board member Monique Hall will be on a panel titled The Great Recession Luncheon Harnessing the Collective Economic Potential of the Black LGBT Community on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 12:30 p.m. Former Task Force fellow Kenyon Farrow is part of this dialogue about the current challenges to employment security, economic empowerment and financial literacy for black LGBT people.

In addition, there will also be a national town hall meeting, Honoring and Protecting the Lives of Black Trans Women, on Friday, Sept. 21, at 9 a.m., at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.

NBJC has organized a series of events for this week, including its now annual LGBT-themed Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference Issue Forum where a panel of media experts will discuss how advancements in LGBT equality have affected Black America and the media landscape as well as a national town hall meeting to address the epidemic of murders of transgender women of color. NBJC will also convene its Black LGBT Leaders Day at the White House, which includes presentations from the Obama administration and an Issue Advocacy Day.
