Statement on Moonlight winning the 2017 Best Picture Academy Award
Washington DC, February 27, 2017 — The National LGBTQ Task Force is making the following statement on Moonlight winning the Best Picture Academy Award at the 89th Academy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles on February 26, 2017.
“I was thrilled to see Moonlight win for Best Picture, particularly in this time of attacks on people of color, in this week of attacks on trans kids and the LGBTQ community by the President. With the wrong envelope being handed to the presenters, causing the cast, director, and producers of Moonlight to wait for their deserved moment in the spotlight, the mirroring of racial dynamics in society was so stark, painful and more than ironic. With the words of director Barry Jenkins and producer Adele Romanski coming clearly through the confusion, I hope this win inspires many dreams for black and brown kids for what is possible,” said Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.
