Statement on investigation into the death of Sandra Bland

Washington, DC, July 24, 2015—The National LGBTQ Task Force is releasing the following statement about the ongoing investigation into the death of Sandra Bland who was reportedly found dead in her jail cell on July 13, 2015.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Sandra Bland. The more we hear about the circumstances surrounding Ms. Bland’s tragic death, including her arrest during a simple traffic stop, the more questions it raises about how black people are treated by law enforcement in this country. We are seeking a swift response from the U.S. Department of Justice to aid in answering these troubling questions. The Task Force has also called on Congress to pass the End Racial Profiling Act of 2015 to address core policing issues that have black and brown people under siege across the nation,” said Stacey Long Simmons, Director of Policy and Government Relations.
