JR “Nexus” Russ is the Communications Manager for the National LGBTQ Task Force. JR decided to shift from local to national activism after spending several years working in communications and community outreach at an advocacy organization focused on eliminating the systemic barriers DC youth face to not just surviving, but thriving. As a queer, black and Filipino, & polyamorous individual (among other identifiable characteristics), JR is constantly looking at the intersectionality of barriers and privilege which affect him and his community, and ways to open up paths to opportunity, personally and professionally. Having worked in the arts and advocacy sectors in the decade finishing undergrad, he is always exploring ways to bring his creative experience and knowledge to imagining and implementing innovative ways to raise awareness and galvanize communities to action.

JR brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his previous positions in communications, marketing and branding, online fundraising, grant writing and website management.

JR is a DC native who graduated from St. Albans School, then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in dance from the University of Maryland, College Park and his Master of Arts in arts management from American University. In the past, JR has worked in arts advocacy, and become involved in the local Burning Man community, the latter of which includes co-leading a working group focused and consent and conduct issues. Prior to working at the Task Force, JR was a board member for Story District and has been involved on and off stage with numerous dance and theatre companies in the area. He remains active in local youth development work, as a member of the Community Arts Team for Any Given Child Dc. JR is also currently a member of the boards for Dance Place and Mischief DC, as well as an Ambassador for Woolly Mammoth and one of five Regional Contacts for the DC area Burning Man community. At the Task Force, JR works to help manage all external communications for and about the Task Force.

JR is based in Washington, DC, where he also serves as one of the co-leads for the CapitalCocks, a regional chapter of the GlamCocks, a Burning Man theme camp.
