Spotlight on Latino/a issues at annual confab



The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the  largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., is holding its annual conference July 7-10 in Las Vegas, and Task Force Deputy Executive Director of External Relations Russell Roybal is on hand.

Russell is participating at the panel Familia es Familia: A public education campaign in partnership with national Latino/a organizations. It is highlighting the first-of-its-kind comprehensive public education campaign aimed at empowering Latino/a organizations and voices to build support within Latino/a communities for acceptance of LGBT community members.

As part of the panel, he is presenting the results of Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Latino/a Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey. The panel will also showcase the recent public opinion research which shows that Latinos/as strongly favor equal rights for LGBT people.

The Task Force has a longtime partnership with NCLR. Recently, the NCLR board of directors endorsed marriage equality.

It’s wonderful to be at the NCLR annual conference talking about the many issues that affects us all — including those of us who are Latino as well as LGBT. We look forward to continuing the discussion and work on issues such as fair access to education and jobs, comprehensive and humane immigration reform, an end to voter suppression and racial profiling, and the right to love and be who we are free of discrimination, among others.
