Resolution condemning sham therapies aimed at LGBT youth introduced in Congress

Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier (Calif.) introduced a resolution this morning urging Congress to condemn so-called ex-gay conversion therapy. The resolution, titled “Stop Harming Our Kids” (SHOK), seeks to protect young people from the psychological abuse of so-called LGBT conversion practices.

“Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is not a disease to be cured or a mental illness that requires treatment. Any effort to change sexual orientation is not medicine, it’s quackery, and we should not be supporting it with taxpayer dollars,” said Congresswoman Speier.

Earlier this year, California made history when Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 1172 into law becoming the first state to protect LGBT minors from ‘reparative’ therapies administered by mental health professionals. The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2013.
