On the move: Immigration bill considered on Senate floor
Today the Senate has resumed consideration of the proposed comprehensive immigration reform bill. With a final vote expected around July 4, be on the lookout for time-sensitive action alerts. With your help, we can do everything in our power to ensure the passage of compassionate and comprehensive immigration legislation.
We are supportive of amendments that would:
- Provide a pathway for citizenship which would give at least 267,000 LGBT undocumented people the opportunity to become full participants in our economy and our democracy
- Ensure that family unity remains at the heart of immigration law and policy
- End unjust detentions and deportations
- Uphold labor and employment standards and ensure that the enforcement of immigration law does not undermine labor and employment rights
- Promote a dignified quality of life for border communities by establishing oversight mechanisms to ensure border agencies uphold basic civil and human rights protections
- Ensure immigrant members of our community are not relegated to permanent second-class status
Immigration reform can have an enormous impact on our undocumented friends, family, and community members who identify as LGBT. We must demand compassionate reform so that people like Bamby Salcedo no longer have to suffer abuse, mistreatment, and dehumanization. We must stand up for people like Michel Mendy who will face violence and criminalization simply because they are LGBT if the U.S. does not grant them asylum. We will be monitoring the Senate’s actions while they consider the comprehensive immigration reform bill, and we will be calling on you with urgent action alerts to contact your senators and voice your support for compassionate immigration reform.
