On National Coming Out Day, come out and be counted
It’s National Coming Out Day, and you may think that you’ve come out, but if you’ve come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an ally to your friends, family and coworkers, you’re still invisible. Why? Because without the data that identifies the LGBT community, LGBT people are invisible in the eyes of our government. And that’s why we need to Queer the Census!
We’ve been working to make sure that we’re all counted by urging the U.S. Census Bureau and other federal agencies to count us. We won the first step in this battle when the census counted same-sex couples in the 2010 census, but that’s just a beginning.
We know the LGBT community is more than just same-sex couples. There are still no plans to add questions that ask individuals if they’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender on the 2020 census or the hundreds of smaller, yearly surveys from the federal government.
We need you to join us whether you’re LGBT or an ally of our community. We have to make sure that LGBT people are accurately counted by the federal government, and we can’t make that happen without everyone’s help. Being identified and counted isn’t just a numbers game. It’s not just about faceless chunks of data, either. It’s about people and people getting what they deserve from the government.
