Washington, DC, May 14, 2018 – Today, the National LGBTQ Task Force joins the Poor People’s Campaign and its 40 Days of Moral Action to create a new movement in the country to challenge the systemic racism, poverty, war economy, ecological devastation, and distorted morality that has plagued the nation.
“The Poor People’s Campaign is a moral revolution for the future of this country. We are letting those in power know that we will not surrender our democracy to the evils of corruption, greed, and inhumanity,” says Rea Carey, the executive director of the Task Force. “LGBTQ people are often asked to be silent or invisible, but we refuse. We pledge to keep our voices loud and our bodies present to call for equality, equity, and justice.”
Launching on May 14 in Washington, DC, the Poor People’s Campaign will hold a direct action every Monday for the next six weeks. The project is inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, to realize his vision of the arc of the moral universe bending towards justice. The Task Force is serving as a convener, trainer, and mobilizer at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities.
May is also the month that the Task Force is focusing on economic justice. In partnership with coalition partners, the Task Force issued a new report on LGBTQ poverty. The report examines food insecurity, housing instability, low-wage earning potential, unemployment/under-employment, and other factors which make LGBTQ people more likely than their peers to live in poverty and presents policy recommendations to address these conditions.
