National LGBTQ Task Force Welcomes ERA Ratification
THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO KIERRA JOHNSON, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL LGBTQ TASK FORCE:
“Today marks a monumental victory for justice and equity and is progress in the fight for federal non-discrimination protections. President Biden’s decision comes after organizations across diverse communities and movements advocated for the recognition of the Equal Rights Amendment.
Our collective efforts underscore the widespread belief that an Equal Rights Amendment must encompass protections for all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Congress approved the ERA fifty-two years ago, and thirty-eight states ratified it as the 28th amendment. We have an opportunity to continue building constitutional infrastructure aimed at erasing gender-based disparities and reinforcing societal values that support opportunities for the most marginalized. LGBTQ communities have fought this for decades, and the declaration comes in the midst of a rise in anti-queer and anti-trans laws. Organizations such as the National Black Justice Collective, GLAAD, National Minority Aids Council, and the National LGBTQ Task Force have been working to advance gender justice through our collective efforts, and we will continue to do so.
We extend our gratitude to President Biden for his ERA declaration and bold commitment to pave the way for more lawmakers to ensure a just society for all. We would also like to thank the Equal Rights Coalition and the encompassing organizations for their dedication and hard work.
While today we celebrate, we must ensure that those whose goal is to diminish and vilify our efforts and hard-earned rights are overshadowed by our solidarity. Please join us in urging the National Archives to officially recognize and publish the ERA in the Constitution.”
The National LGBTQ Task Force builds power, takes action, and creates change to achieve freedom, justice, and equity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. As the progressive voice of the LGBTQ movement and the LGBTQ voice of the progressive movement, the National LGBTQ Task Force organizes people and money in pursuit of liberation for all.
