THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO ALLEN MORRIS, DIRECTOR OF POLICY, NATIONAL LGBTQ TASK FORCE:

“It is astonishing to witness what is happening in Congress – the attacks on immigrants, violent anti-trans laws against our LGBTQ communities, the lies and disinformation.

This law is rooted in hatred.

Our lawmakers should focus on improving taxpayers’ lives and passing legislation that ensures the most marginalized and disadvantaged communities have protections and support. With passing of the Laken Riely Act, it seems our legislators are no longer on the side of the people.

H.R. 29 should not exist. This bill has transformed into an unfortunate situation into a political game that will have a detrimental impact on all Americans regardless of their citizenship status. Our government should not extend levels of power and autonomy to any government agency before a judge reviews the evidence or the defendant has had an opportunity to prove their innocence.

Our research shows that welcoming immigrants into American communities does not increase crime. It strengthens public safety. The 14th Amendment affords equal protection to all; therefore, this bill deliberately violates the Constitution.

Bishop Budde appealed to the President to extend grace – the same should be asked of all lawmakers. Immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes. They are our neighbors, pillars of their communities, and human beings who deserve respect and their dignity to be acknowledged.”
