National LGBTQ Task Force welcomes federal court ruling that Civil Rights Act protects LGB employees

Washington, DC, April 4, 2017 — The National LGBTQ Task Force is welcoming a federal appeals court ruling that sexual orientation is a protected category under the landmark Civil Rights Act.

“This is a significant ruling that will positively impact the lives of millions of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. What makes the ruling even more notable is that this court is comprised of mostly GOP appointees. Most people in our nation, regardless of faith beliefs, race and political affiliation, believe that discrimination in the hiring process and at work based on sexual orientation is inherently and morally wrong. This court ruling affirms this widely shared value,” said Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.

This is the first time a federal appeals court has ruled that sexual orientation is a protected category in employment.
