National LGBTQ Task Force Celebrates 26th Annual National Coming Out Day
WASHINGTON, DC, Oct. 11, 2014 — Today the National LGBTQ Task Force is celebrating National Coming Out Day. Earlier this week, the organization changed its name to the National LGBTQ Task Force and its tagline to “Be you.”
“Coming out is the most significant step on the road to being you for LGBTQ people and their families. We know that coming out, sharing our personal stories, has significantly contributed to the rise in support for the LGBTQ community. In fact, today 75% of Americans say they have a family member, friend, or co-worker that is LGBTQ—compared to only 24% in 1985. By continuing to share our stories, and by living our lives openly, we can expedite long-lasting change and create a society that celebrates and respects the diversity of human expression and identity. Despite all of the progress we have made, coming out is still a profound act of courage for LGBTQ people and one that continues to inspire.”
