BREAKING: Miami-Dade Gender Identity/Gender Expression Vote a “Great Victory for Miami-Dade and for Freedom, Justice and Equality”
MIAMI, FL, December 2, 2014 ― This evening Miami-Dade County Commissioners voted to expand the county’s human rights ordinance to include gender identity and gender expression. The decision is being praised by the National LGBTQ Task Force.
“This is a great victory for Miami-Dade and for freedom, justice and equality. We congratulate and thank SAVE for their years of hard work and the thousands of fair-minded Miami-Dade residents who have expressed their strong support for these important protections. By making this decision, the leaders of Miami-Dade have sent a very clear message to the nation and the world that this is a county and a tourist destination that stands for inclusion and that welcomes everyone; that Miami-Dade is a great place to live, a great place to do business, a great place to visit, and a great place to ‘be you’ without any barriers,” said Liebe Gadinsky, Miami resident, local activist and National LGBTQ Task Force board member.
The successful vote comes almost sixteen years to the day since sexual orientation was added to the county’s human rights ordinance ― an addition that has been successfully protected over the years by the Task Force and its partners.
