Introducing Brie Gates
(Monday, July 8, 2019) Welcome to the first of our blog posts profiling this summer’s Fellows & Interns! And it’s our pleasure to kick it off by introducing you to Brie Gates. Brie is one of our Advocacy and Action Interns.
Brie’s pronouns are she and they pronouns. They are a 21-year-old Senior at Tufts University, majoring in International Relations and Russian. And although she is joining us from Boston for the summer, their hometown is Ormond Beach, Florida. We thought we’d ask Brie some questions to get to know them better, including her interests for the summer and in general.
Why did you choose the Task Force?
I chose to work with the Task Force this summer because the organization perfectly aligns with my commitment to upholding and fighting for freedom and equity for all. I am excited to learn more about nonprofit human rights work in DC, and how I can push back against policy that infringes on our basic human rights, especially under such an antagonistic administration.
What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Shoot for the moon; if you miss you will die in outer space, which is cool!” – Katya Zamolodchikova
Who is an LGBTQ+ person who inspires you and why?
My mom, Samantha, is a proud bisexual woman who raised me to be fiercely independent, outspoken, and determined. She taught me what it means to truly work towards and achieve anything I put my mind to, and it’s that passion that drives my life.
Who is one of your favorite singers and why?
My favorite singer is Trixie Mattel, a drag queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race who also happens to be the folk singer/songwriter behind many a heartwarming and heartbreaking country bop, including a lesbian love song inspired by Dolly Parton and her rumored female lover.
Really thrilled to have you with us, Brie! And to our Task Force family, keep an eye out for more profiles of as well as blog posts from all of our summer fellows and interns.
