Immigration is an LGBT issue
Last month the Supreme Court struck down significant portions of Arizona’s horrible anti-immigrant law, but left intact its “show me your papers” provision, which requires law enforcement officers to verify the immigration status of anyone they stop.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people – particularly people of color – know all too well how easily those who are perceived as “different” can be singled out for persecution. And we know racial profiling affects LGBT people of color far more than it affects straight people of color.
Behind the hysterical anti-immigrant rhetoric are stories of real people – hardworking responsible individuals who want to take care of their families and create a bright future for their children.
We live in a country where no one should be afraid to simply walk down the street.
