National LGBTQ Task Force Statement on the Passing of Elijah Cummings

Rest in power, Rep. Elijah Cummings.

(Washington, DC – October 17, 2019) – Today, our nation lost a leader with incredible integrity and honor, U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings. Rep. Cummings was a fierce advocate for his constituents and the good of the country. Raised by Pentecostal ministers, Rep. Cummings leveraged his faith and role as a leading Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives in his support of the LGBTQ community. Rep. Cummings fought for our equal rights and pushed back against legislation that would create a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

He helped to encourage the Black vote for marriage equality in Maryland by sharing his journey story of getting to yes in light of growing up in a conservative religious home. He said at the time his support came from the belief that “everyone should have the opportunity to live their best life.” This ideal guided much of how he governed, legislated, and advocated.

The National LGBTQ Task Force community is deeply saddened by the loss of his voice, presence, and boldness. His moral and political bravery will be missed. In light of the times we live in, we need that kind of courage more now than ever.
