Carey: Laramie Council decision “fitting tribute to Matthew Shepard’s memory”

Washington, D.C., May 14, 2015—The National LGBTQ Task Force is welcoming the decision by Laramie City Council to approve 7-2 a local anti-discrimination ordinance — 17 years after the brutal murder of gay student Matthew Shepard.

“We are pleased that Laramie City Council has passed this measure to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It is a fitting tribute to Matthew’s memory. However, the state of Wyoming has a long way to go to live up to its state motto ‘equal rights.’ The best way remember Matthew is to make freedom, justice and equality a reality for all LGBTQ people in Wyoming and across our nation,” said Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director.
