It's not too late to make a donation to the Miami Recognition Dinner
More than 35 sponsors and approximately 800 guests contributed to another record-breaking year for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's 16th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner, presented by Wells Fargo, on Saturday, October 6, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. While the numbers are still being tallied, the event is expected to have grossed well over $500,000!

The 2012 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award was presented to Elizabeth F. Schwartz, an attorney whose practice emphasizes representation of the LGBT community in family formation and dissolution matters. Her many contributions to the LGBT community include serving as pro bono counsel in several cases seeking to overturn Florida's uniquely bigoted 1977 ban forbidding gays and lesbians from adopting children. She was introduced with a video tribute. Our 2012 National Leadership Award was presented to Matt Foreman, who created many of the hallmarks of New York City's Pride events before serving as Executive Director of the New York City Lesbian & Gay Anti-Violence Project, the Empire State Pride Agenda and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. He led the Task Force to ensure that the Miami Recognition Dinner and Winter Party Festival stayed in community hands and continue to generate financial support to Miami-Dade LGBT organizations.

The awards ceremony was emceed by LeVar Burton, best known for hosting the PBS children's program Reading Rainbow and his roles in the TV miniseries Roots and the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey addressed the audience and was introduced by Gloria Estefan via video.

The awards ceremony was preceded by a VIP Cocktail Reception presented by Brinker International and a silent auction presented by American Airlines and featuring more than 500 spectacular items. Spirits for the event were provided by Grey Goose Vodka, one of the Task Force's national corporate partners, and champagne and wine were donated by Moet & Chandon. Many of our guests stayed after the ceremony to enjoy dancing to the music of DJ AJ Reddy.

The Task Force would like to thank all of our sponsors and host committee members, especially presenting sponsor Wells Fargo, diamond sponsor Shore Club, and platinum sponsors Liebe & Seth Gadinsky and Stonewall Community Foundation - James G. Pepper Fund.

All combined net proceeds from the 16th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner and the 2013 Winter Party Festival next March benefit organizations serving the LGBT community. The Task Force donates the majority of the combined net proceeds to the Miami-Dade LGBT community through the GLBT Community Projects Fund administered by The Miami Foundation; the remainder helps fund the Task Force's efforts to achieve equality for all LGBT people. To date, the Task Force has donated close to $1.4 million to the Fund.
