Everyone's talking about the looming "fiscal showdown" and "fiscal cliff" right now. Unfortunately, not many are talking about how much the fiscal cliff budget battle is going to impact LGBT people. But the Task Force is talking about just that. And we're doing more than talking: we're building support for a balanced solution that doesn't protect millionaires at the expense of everyone else across the country. You can help by by sending a message to Congress urging them to pass a budget that protects LGBT people and their families. There isn't much time left — please take action now!

Cliffie Bailey is Executive Assistant to the Deputy Executive Director here at the Task Force and she's also one of our Change Agents. She began giving to the Task Force at Creating Change 2012 in Baltimore and hasn't missed a month of giving since. Cliffie loves all of our programs here at the Task Force, but has a special fondness for the on-the-ground campaign work that our Academy for Leadership and Action does all over the country. We love Cliffie being a Change Agent — why don't you join her?

Don't worry — we've got the perfect gift for you, and you don't even have to get up. Give a gift to the Task Force in someone's name. It's super easy and will really brighten someone's day. Plus you get to educate friends and family about the vital work the Task Force is doing every day. At the beginning of the cold war, the federal government secretly looked into its employees' sexual orientation. Then in December, 1950, a Senate report called "Employment of Homosexuals and Other Sex Perverts in Government" was given to members of Congress. This report claimed that since "homosexuality is a mental illness," homosexuals "constitute security risks" to the country. This purging became known as the "lavender scare," and close to 5,000 gay men and women were discharged from the military and 500 lost their government jobs.
