Economic benefits of marriage under federal and Massachusetts law

When Massachusetts same-sex couples gained the right to legally marry, they gained access to rights heterosexual couples have had for years. Just a few of the benefits that were denied to same-sex couples before they were allowed to marry in Massachusetts:

  • Federal and state income tax liability;
  • Social Security retirement and survivor benefits;
  • Worker’s compensation and public employee benefits.
