Report Type:
October 03, 2012
In April 2012, with Macy v. Holder, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced that the sex discrimination provisions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protect transgender people. This policy paper attempts to explain what Macy does, as well as its limitations, for both transgender people as well as the entire lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movement; what it means for local, state and federal advocacy efforts; whether the movement should change its tactics or strategies; and how this ruling should be explained to employers and the general public.
