Urges Senate to pass critical legislation

WASHINGTON, May 12 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund applauds the New York Assembly’s passage today of legislation extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. The measure passed by a vote of 89 to 52; the Assembly first passed a marriage equality bill in 2007 by a vote of 85 to 61. Consideration of the legislation now shifts to the Senate.

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund

“It is heartening to see New York moving toward marriage equality, and we greatly look forward to the day in the not-too-distant future when the Empire State joins Maine, Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut and Massachusetts in granting this fundamental freedom. No longer will same-sex couples who live in New York and wish to get married have to cross state lines to do so. That day will be a great one for New York — already a leader in so many other ways — as well as the entire country.

“We thank the state Assembly for passing this bill today, with special kudos to Assemblymember Danny O’Donnell for leading the charge and compelling his colleagues to have the courage to act. We applaud the Empire State Pride Agenda for its dogged organizing and lobbying efforts leading to today’s victory. It’s now time for the Senate to take a definitive stand for equality and fairness by passing this critical legislation.”
