WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force today marks the 10th Annual Celebrate Bisexuality Day. This day is a call for bisexual people and their families, friends and supporters to recognize and celebrate bisexuality, bisexual history, bisexual community and culture, and the bisexual people in their lives.

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

“Celebrate Bisexuality Day is a day to recognize and honor bisexual people for their contributions to our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. We mark this important day with an understanding and appreciation for all that bisexual people bring to our vibrant and diverse LGBT community.

“Over the past two decades, a ‘lesbian and gay’ movement has thankfully evolved into a ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender’ movement: a political movement that seeks full legal equality and full social acceptance for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. My work as an activist, a leader and as a member of this community has been enriched by my bisexual colleagues, their expertise and their perspectives. I am proud to stand with them on this day and every day, honoring all that they bring to our politics, our society, our communities and our families.

“We are bisexual, transgender, lesbian and gay people, standing together, working together, and changing our world together.”

The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We do this by training activists, equipping state and local organizations with the skills needed to organize broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement’s premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality and to counter right-wing lies. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we also have offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis and Cambridge.
