Victory against discrimination in Pocatello, Idaho

Task Force Action Fund and partners push back anti-LGBTQ ballot measure

POCATELLO, ID, May 21 —The voters of Pocatello, Idaho have defeated a ballot measure that was designed to roll-back the city's anti-discrimination ordinance. Pocatello City Council passed a non-discrimination ordinance last year; equality opponents placed the measure to repeal the popular ordinance on the ballot.

"Pocatello has a much deserved reputation as a welcoming and hospitable place for everyone. Pocatellans, like the vast majority of Americans, are against discrimination. That's why the 'Gateway to the Northwest' voted to reject this close-minded and backward-looking ballot initiative," said Sarah Reece, Task Force Action Fund Academy of Leadership and Action Director.

The Task Force Action Fund partnered with the Fair Pocatello Campaign, Planned Parenthood NW, ACLU of Idaho, HRC, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Leadership Lab, Equality, Utah and the Pride Foundation to help defeat the measure.

Task Force Action Fund staff are at the forefront of successfully defeating local initiatives designed to roll-back progress on LGBTQ equality, freedom and justice. These include: Pocatello, Idaho; Royal Oak, Kalamazoo, and Traverse City, Michigan; Bowling Green, Ohio; Topeka, Kansas; Tacoma, WA; and, Gainesville and Miami, Florida.

From our nation's state houses to the White House and Capitol Hill, the Task Force Action Fund works to create positive change for all LGBTQ people and their families.

"Regardless of where you live in our nation, the place you call home should protect you from discrimination," Reece said.
