WASHINGTON, May 20 — U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) today introduced the Student Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit discrimination and harassment in public schools on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. A companion bill was introduced in the U.S. House in January by U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.). Both bills include clear protections for children of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) parents, as well as students who are LGBT or perceived to be.

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

"Across the country, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children are being bullied and harassed just because of who they are. There is no question that all children deserve the equal opportunity to learn without threat of bullying and harassment in public schools. Having strong legislative remedies for students who experience bullying is critical to creating a learning environment where all of us as parents can be assured that our children are safe to learn and grow. This legislation will go a long way toward curbing school bullying and providing teachers and staff with the tools to protect LGBT students and the kids of LGBT parents from being targeted. We applaud Senator Franken for introducing this critical bill to ensure that all children are treated fairly in every school."
