WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is encouraging all LGBT people to celebrate National Coming Out Day by working out — being out at work.

"The brilliance of coming out is that it makes who we are personal for everyone who thought they didn’t know or work with any LGBT people. This National Coming Out Day we encourage everyone to come out at work. You can’t underestimate the inspiration you will be."

The Task Force is encouraging LGBT people to not only come out at work, but to have meaningful conversations with their coworkers about the lack of federal employment protections. Social media graphics can be shared to help spread the word about working out and to serve as conversation starters.

While millions of LGBT Americans are out at work and protected by state law from discrimination, millions more still face the possibility of being fired for simply being open about who they are and who they love. In fact, right now, it’s legal to fire someone in 29 states because they're LGB. In 33 states, it’s legal to fire someone solely for being transgender.

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act — likely to be considered by the Senate before the end of the year — would provide protection for LGBT employees from discrimination across the nation.

"The American Dream begins with a good job at a good company or organization where you can bring your whole self to work without facing the threat of being fired and where you will be evaluated on merit rather than on who you are. That’s why we need the Senate to pass ENDA NOW."
