Task Force Applauds U.S. Department of Agriculture's Adoption of Transgender Non-Discrimination Protections

WASHINGTON, DC, July 17, 2014 —The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for adding gender identity protections to its federal non-discrimination regulations regarding programs or activities conducted by the department. The USDA is the first federal agency to issue federal regulations that ban gender identity discrimination in all activities conducted by any employee of the department.

"Discrimination has no place in our federal government and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken another important step to prove just that.

"Fifteen years ago, the USDA paved the way on federal rights for LGBT people by becoming the first agency to add sexual orientation non-discrimination protections. Yesterday, the USDA once again demonstrated their leadership and commitment to equality by extending nondiscrimination protections to transgender people in every program the department operates.

"We thank Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Dr. Joe Leonard and his team for working with the Task Force to eradicate anti-LGBT discrimination. We look forward to working with the USDA on ensuring that it prohibits discrimination in programs the department funds, but does not operate, such as SNAP and WIC."
