Task Force Lauds President's Decision to Ban Transgender Discrimination Against Federal Employees

Organization Calls on Department of Defense to Repeal Transgender Military Ban

WASHINGTON, DC, July 1, 2014 —The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is welcoming President Obama's announcement that he will sign an executive order banning discrimination against transgender federal employees. The president announced the historic policy change yesterday during a special reception in celebration of LGBTQ pride month.

“This is a significant victory for transgender rights and the fight for full equality for all. We applaud the President for listening to our calls to eradicate anti-LGBT discrimination throughout the nation.

"However, this executive order doesn't protect all transgender federal employees from employment discrimination — transgender people who serve in our nation's military are still banned from serving openly. Every American should have the opportunity to serve our country in the military regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The military's ban on transgender people serving openly was ill conceived, is unfair, is blatantly discriminatory, and needs to be updated. We call on the President and the Department of Defense to act swiftly and allow courageous transgender Americans to serve openly and not in silence."

Rea Carey, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

Currently, there are 12 countries that allow transgender people to serve openly in the military. These countries include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Israel, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and United Kingdom.

This is the second LGBTQ-related executive order the president has said he will sign in the past week. The last was to ban discrimination against LGBT people working for federal contractors.
