Task Force to release new report titled Youth in the crosshairs: the third wave of ex-gay activism

WHAT: Audio press conference to release Youth in the Crosshairs: the Third Wave of Ex-Gay Activism, a new study by the Task Force Policy Institute that reveals the ex-gay movement's newest target — lesbian, gay and bisexual youth — as the object of both "preventive" measures and so-called "conversion-therapy." It reveals how this third wave of ex-gay activity works. These programs, designed to demonize lesbian, gay and bisexual young people and exploit the fears of parents, are carefully examined under a fresh light. Study author, South Florida survivors of ex-gay therapy and other experts will speak.

Jerry Stephenson, a former Southern Baptist minister and ex-gay program survivor; Hayley Gorenberg, deputy legal director, Lambda Legal; other experts TBA

WHY: In an ongoing effort to demonize and block lesbian, gay and bisexual people from attaining basic rights, extremist right-wing groups are promoting the notion that homosexuality is a sickness to be cured. Despite a growing body of evidence that shows that so-called "conversion therapy" is both bogus and harmful, groups such as Exodus International and Focus on the Family continue to push this widely criticized and discredited theory for their own profit and political gain. These groups have turned their sights toward society's most vulnerable population — youth — by targeting them with "preventive" measures and conversion in a third wave of "ex-gay" activity.

The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the political power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community from the ground up. We do this by training activists, organizing broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and by building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement’s premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality and to counter right-wing lies. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we also have offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis and Cambridge.
