WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 — The Washington Post has reported that Mary Cheney is pregnant and that she and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are expecting the baby this spring. Mary Cheney is the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney. The vice president' office said he and his wife were "looking forward with eager anticipation" to the baby's birth. Christian right groups denounced Mary Cheney's decision, with one extremist calling it "unconscionable" and another saying, "Just because you can conceive a child outside a one-woman, one-man marriage doesn't mean it's a good idea."

Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

"In the past, we've been very critical of the vice president for putting politics before the needs of his own family. Today, I want to thank him and his wife for saying they are 'looking forward with eager anticipation' to the birth of Mary and Heather's child. This expression of real family values is in sharp contrast to those from groups who make a living supposedly safeguarding them. Apparently these would-be theocrats are pro-family and pro-life, except when the baby has two moms.

"We congratulate Mary Cheney and her partner and wish them the very best in growing their family and bringing a child into the world. They will be joining the thousands of lesbian- and gay-headed households raising children in the United States.

"Unlike most same-sex couples, Mary Cheney and Heather Poe are a family of some economic means and they will be able to hire lawyers and create some legal protections for their family. Sadly, because it is unclear whether Virginia permits second-parent adoptions, Heather may be a legal stranger to her child unless they move out of Virginia. It is ironic and sad that Dick Cheney's own daughter, 'daughter-in-law' and grandchild will be disadvantaged by anti-gay family laws championed by the Bush-Cheney administration."

The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the political power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community from the ground up. We do this by training activists, organizing broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and by building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement’s premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality and to counter right-wing lies. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we also have offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis and Cambridge.
