2011 Pink & Purple Weekend 2011 Pink & Purple Weekend 2011 Pink & Purple Weekend 2011 Pink & Purple Weekend
Our first Pink & Purple weekend was a big success! Enjoy the recap of the event below.
On Friday, June 3, we kicked off the weekend with a women's event, dubbed Pink & Purple Sunset, which was held on the rooftop at the Donovan House Hotel. Close to 200 women attended, with music provided by DJs vAnniety Kills, Natty Boom and Junebullet, and there was also a performance by the DC Gurly Show. At sunset, the event moved down to the Sky Lounge where the party continued until almost midnight.

The following day was Pink & Purple Power, a skills building training that was lead by the Task Force's Academy for Leadership in Action and hosted by Georgetown Law. This one-day training was split into two parts, a morning briefing session and an afternoon of workshops.

Finally on Sunday, June 5 the Task Force's Pink & Purple Recognition Awards took place at the gorgeous Mayflower Hotel. Guests spent the first hour mingling over Grey Goose cocktails and Barefoot Wine and Bubbly. At Noon, Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey delivered her first Toast to the Movement speech. She spoke about the three honorees, the New Beginning Initiative and also talked about how we can learn lessons from the almost four decades since the Roe v. Wade Decision. At the end of her speech, every glass in the room was raised in a toast to our wonderful honorees and our movement.

During the brunch program, John Stocks, new Executive Director of the National Education Association and Peggy Shorey, Executive Director of Pride at Work presented the Leadership Award to Skip Roberts, Assistant Director of Government Affairs at Service Employees International Union. Later, Steering Committee members Monique Hall and Jerry Clark (former Task Force Board Member) presented the Leadership Award to Deacon Maccubbin and Jim Bennett (who unfortunately couldn't attend), founder and owners of the former Lambda Rising Bookstore.

Steering Committee Member and Vice Chair of the Board, Hans Johnson, introduced Rea Carey and Eliseo Medina, Secretary-Treasurer of Service Employees International Union, to present the Leadership Award to the US Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis. The Secretary spoke of her ease in supporting the LGBT community, including the hiring of LGBT workers in her department.

The brunch also included a live auction featuring items from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, a Miami Beach vacation package for Winter Party Festival and an autographed guitar by Indigo Girls.
