Government Resources Project

Government Resources Project

The Government Resources Project is an innovative program of the Task Force that combines legislative and grant-seeking strategies to enable local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations that provide direct services (e.g., social services, medical care, counseling) to tap into local, state and federal government funding. The LGBT community pays taxes just like everyone else. But our community’s human services network does not receive our fair share of government resources in return.

Our goal is to pursue government resources both to increase our community’s piece of the pie to serve urgent and unmet human service needs as well as to strengthen the infrastructure of LGBT political power. The federal budget, reaching nearly $3 trillion for FY07, is determined through the budget and appropriations process which, unlike congressional legislative responsibilities, must occur annually as directed by the U.S. Constitution. Budget bills are must-pass bills. Without them, the government will literally shut down. Most local LGBT agencies, however, lack the capacity to pursue government resources.

In response to this critical need, the Task Force created the Government Resources Project to assist local LGBT agencies in the pursuit of government funding. For more information about the Government Resources Project, please contact Becky Levin at blevin@theTaskForce.org.
