Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc.
Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc. (UHU) was founded in 1985 as a self-help group for HIV-positive black men who are gay or bisexual. It has grown into one of the largest gay-identified black AIDS organizations in the nation and serves the Washington, DC; suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia area.
UHU’s mission is to reduce HIV infection in the African-American community. The organization specializes in HIV education and risk-reduction interventions for black gay and bisexual men. UHU also provides HIV counseling, testing and referral (CTR) services and outreach to heterosexual men and women.
UHU provides a variety of programs at the community level, for groups and for individuals, ranging from street and venue-based outreach to the Popular Opinion Leader intervention adapted for black gay men’s social network. UHU also does outreach to heterosexual barbershops and beauty shops and provides alcohol and drug-free social activities.
In 2001, UHU was the first black gay-identified AIDS organization in the country to purchase a building, housing its headquarters and service facility. We are proud to have 10 programs and services, 14 full-time staff, 60 volunteers, and a budget of $1.4 million, and most proud that all of our many programs and services are provided free of charge.
