Day One: Democratic National Convention in Denver

Day One: Democratic National Convention in Denver

By Lisa Mottet, Transgender Civil Rights Project Director, August 26, 12:14 pm

The atmosphere in Denver is energized; the city is packed with politically-minded people from all over the country.

Mingling and mixing with delegates, members of Congress and other elected officials, I have seen and spoken to many champions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights on this, just Day One (Aug. 25) of the convention.

From Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) presenting the platform language to the LGBT Caucus, to meeting Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) as we all left the convention center after Michelle Obama’s speech, to my being able to personally thank state Sen. Tom Duane of New York for his advocacy on transgender rights, the convention is a unique opportunity to advance LGBT rights.

There are so many important policymakers to interact with, educate and thank for their advocacy for equal rights for all LGBT people. It is thrilling to be a part of history in the making.
