Another reflection from Creating Change: All new again!
By Ricci Levy, Executive Director, The Woodhull Freedom Foundation, February 19, 1:14 pm
Creating Change. What an apt name for a conference that is all about the possibilities of change; personal, political, organizational and societal change.
As one of the founders of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation and its Executive Director, I have been a fortunate participant in several years of Creating Change and was responsible, with the enthusiastic support of the Task Force, for establishing the first Sexual Freedom Track and hosting the first Sexual Freedom Institute. I give you all of that background only so you'll know that I was not new to this conference but that every year is new for me.
And it was all new again this year! I was struck, this year, by the fact that this is not only a safe place for all of the members of the LGBT community but also for all of us who work to make the whole world a safe place where the recognition of sexual freedom as a fundamental human right is a reality. It is as if I sit down at the registration desk with the issues and frustrations of our daily lives resting firmly on my shoulders and I stand up wearing my attendee badge and step into the magic world of Creating Change.
And for those four days, all things are possible. Change is not only possible, it's as close as our fingertips - and what's more, we can walk into any session and learn how easy it is to make change happen in our daily lives. The energy and enthusiasm are contagious, as is the hope and absolute belief for four days that we - the power of "we" - can change the world. And that belief is enough to carry me through another year until I can renew myself next year in Denver!
