Action Fund urges President-elect Obama to leave no community behind

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund Executive Director Rea Carey attended President-elect Barack Obama’s highly anticipated, invitation-only speech yesterday in which he called for urgent action to reverse a collapsing economy.

“The incoming administration’s plan for this ailing economy appears to include initiatives that gain ground lost over the last eight years and invites all people to share both in the struggle toward stability and the promise of prosperity. ... The Task Force and LGBT community will continue to work with this next administration to advance policies that take into account the unique issues faced by LGBT people, and to ensure our lives and families are not left behind.”
— Task Force Action Fund Executive Director Rea Carey

Task Force Policy Institute releases groundbreaking study examining Prop. 8 vote

The Task Force Policy Institute released a groundbreaking, in-depth analysis of the Proposition 8 vote this week that shows party affiliation, political ideology, frequency of attending worship services and age were the driving forces behind the measure’s passage. Through a precinct-by-precinct analysis and review of multiple other sources of data, the study puts African-American support for Proposition 8 at no more than 59 percent, nowhere close to the 70 percent widely reported since the night of the election.

The report, which was unveiled Tuesday during a national audio press conference, received widespread media coverage by major media outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Oakland Tribune.

What you can do right now: Debunk the Prop. 8 myth! Forward this e-mail to your friends and family and let them know the truth behind what really happened with Prop 8.

Thousands of LGBT activists to gather one week after inauguration

Thousands of LGBT activists will converge in Denver, Colo., just one week after the inauguration of a new administration, to strategize on how to advance LGBT equality in this new political climate. They will be attending the 21st National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change, taking place Jan. 28–Feb. 1., where they will share lessons from the 2008 election and acquire the skills needed to build the political power of the LGBT community in 2009 and beyond.
