Action Fund applauds historic inclusion of LGBT issues in Democratic National Platform

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund Executive Director Rea Carey spoke at an audio press conference yesterday about the proposed Democratic National Platform, which was hosted by the National Stonewall Democrats and featured U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), a member of the Platform Committee.

“The vision put forth in the 2008 Democratic National Platform is historic in its embrace of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Never before in our country’s history has there been a national party platform that is so inclusive of our entire community. ... Is the platform perfect? No. ... Is it a good foundation? Unequivocally yes,” Carey said.

Powerhouse lineup of speakers at Many Stories, One Voice

Some of the country’s most dynamic pro-LGBT faith leaders will address the state of the faith movement and the inclusion of LGBT people at the upcoming Many Stories, One Voice conference. The Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson of the Metropolitan Community Churches, Bishop Yvette Flunder and the Rev. Dr. Miguel De La Torre are among the featured speakers who will highlight the advances of, and challenges ahead, for the pro-LGBT welcoming church movement. The unique gathering, convened by the Task Force, will be held Sept. 4–7 in New Orleans, La.

Gender expression is for everybody

In our OutSpoken Blog, Task Force intern Kyla Bender-Baird reflects on the importance of research and advocacy for transgender rights, as well as her related project at the Policy Institute this summer.

“I have personally benefited from researching trans issues. Gaining a better understanding of the diversity of gender identities and expressions has helped me become more comfortable and secure in my own gender identity and expression,” writes Bender-Baird.
